Federal laws and provincial regulations pertaining to the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) have established standards with which private health care organizations must comply to maintain the security and confidentiality of protected health information. PIPA governs how personal information about patients and employees may be collected, used, and disclosed.
Personal information (e.g., name, home address, home phone number, ID numbers) will not be collected, used, or disclosed without the implied or informed consent of the patient.
Under PIPA, implied consent (i.e. patient provided information for the purposes of care and treatment) is sufficient for the collection, use and disclosure of personal information for direct health-care purposes and may extend to parties who provide care to the patient as part of the patient’s care team
