SPORTS MEDICINE (ORTHOPAEDICS)

Foot & Ankle

The foot and ankle are complex parts of the body that can be affected by a variety of injuries or conditions. Many of these issues may need be corrected with surgery.

Our foot and ankle surgeons are world leaders in their field with vast experience treating patients with a wide variety of concerns. The surgeons are very involved with developing new surgical techniques such as minimally invasive surgery, deformity correction, and ankle joint replacement. They are internationally known and teach and educate in many countries around the world. Areas of expertise include total ankle arthroplasty, foot and ankle fusions, sports injuries of the foot and ankle, minimally invasive surgery, and foot deformity correction.

Many patients experience significant ankle pain that is often caused by arthritis. If other non-surgical treatments are unsuccessful, surgery such as total ankle arthroplasty or ankle fusion may be an option to treat the pain.  Total ankle arthroplasty is where parts of the ankle joint are replaced with an artificial implant while maintaining range of motion and function and reducing pain. Ankle fusions are when two or more bones in the ankle are fused together to reduce the pain and swelling from arthritis.

There are many conditions that affect the structure and shape of the foot. Foot deformities such as bunions, hammertoe, claw or mallet toe, flat foot, and high arches can cause pain and reduce function. Our surgeons are experts with forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot correction, and using a variety of techniques including minimally invasive surgery, may be able to correct these foot deformities.

Hip Arthroscopy

People of all ages can experience hip pain. Hip arthroscopy techniques have improved significantly over the years and therefore hip arthroscopy has become a more accepted procedure to treat people experiencing hip pain.

Our hip surgeons are well known across North America for their focus on hip arthroscopy and athletic hip injuries.

Hip Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat many different issues such as labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement, abductor tendonitis or tear among other diagnoses. It is also common for elite athletes of all ages to experience hip pain due to intense training and injury.

If the pain does not subside with non-surgical treatments such as rest, physical therapy and steroid injections, the person may be referred to an orthopaedic hip surgeon. Early diagnosis and treatment with hip arthroscopy may allow patients can return to most of their previous activities and often the same level of competition.

Shoulder

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body and therefore is easily injured. Shoulder injuries are often caused by over-use, over-reach, and repetitive intensive motions during athletic and everyday activities as well as from accidents or falls.

Activities such as swimming, baseball, tennis, weightlifting, house cleaning, painting walls, and gardening may lead to shoulder injuries. This can happen to people of all ages from everyday wear and tear and the natural aging process. Injuries to the shoulder commonly involve muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Fractures are less common.

Some warning signs of a shoulder injury are pain, stiffness, weakness, limited motion, numbness, tingling, and a feeling of the shoulder ‘popping out’. If you experience any of these symptoms and they are not easily resolved with rest, anti-inflammatory medication, and ice, you should seek medical attention.

The shoulder surgeons at Cambie are specialists in complex disorders of the shoulder and have treated elite athletes and other active individuals from around the world. Our surgeons are widely regarded as experts in arthroscopic shoulder surgery. They have been involved as team physicians for national, international, and professional sports teams.

With proper diagnosis and treatment, the person with a shoulder injury can return to part or all their regular activities.

Knee

The knee is a complex joint which makes it susceptible to injuries of the ligaments, tendons, cartilages, bones, and muscles. Often these injuries are caused by a forceful twisting motion of the knee and is very common in athletes.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and meniscus tears are the most common injuries of the knee. Athletes who participate in skiing and other sports that change direction quickly have a higher incidence of an ACL injury.

Our surgeons are some of the best ranked orthopaedic surgeons in Canada and are well versed in treatment of your knee injuries. The surgeons are fellowship trained and experts in arthroscopic surgery and athletic injuries. All our surgeons are experienced physicians and/or medical leads for professional, Olympic, and varsity teams and athletes.
